Blue Hope

Writing this one took me a while because I like to end off on a somewhat hopeful note when I write about the Toronto Blue Jays. On October 3rd, 2022, I watched that famous heartbreaking defeat as the Jays’ nine-run lead went up in smoke and the Seattle Mariners performed the greatest comeback in MLB post-season history.

It started with a collision in the center field and ended with a fall from the mountain after the Jays fought their way to the post-season in the toughest division in baseball, the AL East.

Now a new season has begun, and Toronto shows signs of having a competitive team this season. The Toronto Blue Jays finished last season second in the AL East with a 92-win and 72-loss record behind the New York Yankees. Moreover, they came off 2023 spring training with a decent record of 17 wins and 15 losses, finishing fifth best in the American League. That said, I think a playoff run seems possible this season.

Toronto has a similar roster to last season. Currently, Canada’s boys of summer are fighting in a strange turn of events, the Baltimore Orioles for second place in the AL East. They also took two of three in the first three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays who currently sit first in the division. In addition, they won two of three against the New York Yankees. From watching the team play and looking up their stats on espn.com, offensively and defensively the team is consistent and dependable. As of May 3rd 2023, they rank tenth in batting, twelfth in fielding, and thirteenth in pitching in the majors. The stats are good overall, but there is still room for improvement. As a team, they look good and are entertaining to watch. I see cause for hope in the Toronto Blue Jays making the playoffs this season.
